Clean sweep for Deep Impact in Japan Grade 3

EXCITING young Japanese sire Deep Impact fielded four of the 13 runners in the Grade 3 Mainuichi Hai Stakes at Hanshin on Saturday, and three of them filled the first three places.

Historical, the favourite in the 1m1f event, beat his paternal half-brothers Mount Shasta and Spielberg into second and third.

The clean sweep continues a productive spell for Deep Impact and Historical is the sire's sixth individual Pattern race winner of the year.

Historical follows Gentildonna (won the Sho Shinzan Kinen), BestDeal (Keisei Hai), Donau Blue (Kyoto Himba), World Ace (Kisarigi Sho) and Verxina (Daily Hai Queen Cup).

It is also the second Graded race clean sweep of the year for Deep Impact, after World Ace beat Historical and Veiled Impact in the Kisarigi Sho last month.

Historical was bred by Northern Farm out of the winning Northern Taste mare Brilliant Very, who has produced three other stakes winners headed by Company, who landed the Grade 1 Mile Championship and Tenno Sho.

Brilliant Very is out of the Florida Listed winner Crafty Wife, making her a sister to Listed-winning miler Big Shori, Nakayama Grand Steeplechase winner Big Taste and the dam of Tenno Sho hero Tosen Jordan.

Deep Impact's brilliant start to his stud career is underlined by the fact that his first two crops have yielded three Grade 1 winners: Joie De Vivre (Hanshin Juvenile Fillies Stakes), Marcellina (Oka Sho) and Real Impact (Yasuda Kinen).

Deep Impact, a multiple Grade 1-winning son of Sunday Silence, stands at Shadai Stallion Station in Japan.
