Japanese miler Seeking The Best off the mark

FAMILY Reserve became the first winner for former Hill 'n' Dale Farm sire Seeking The Best when landing the 6f maiden at Woodbine on Friday by a neck.

The filly is one of 45 two-year-olds from the first crop of Irish-bred Seeking The Best, who spent two seasons at Hill 'n' Dale Farm in Kentucky - initially at $7,500 - before switching to Colebrook Farms in Ontario, Canada. The son of Seeking The Gold stood the past season for C$4,000.

Unraced at two, Seeking The Best developed into a high-class sprinter- miler in Japan, his finest moment coming when scoring at Group 3 level over a mile in 2006.

He hails from one of the most successful families in the stud book being out of Grade 3 winner Mackie, a half-sister to Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero and daughter of Grade 2 winner and blue hen Glowing Tribute.

Family Reserve was bred by part owner James Everatt. She is one of two winners out of Wild Bubbles, a Wild Event half-sister to Grade 3 winner Barbara O'Brien.
