Hearts fires up Tatts Autumn HIT at 550k

PAT Eddery's stable star Hearts Of Fire changed hands for 550,000gns at Tattersalls on Monday night when selling to Qatari trainer Ibrahim Al-Malki to top the opening session of the Horses In Training Sale.

The Firebreak colt progressed from winning last season's Brocklesby Stakes to landing the Group 1 Gran Criterium in Milan and this year finished third to Canford Cliffs in the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Seemingly every other person left in the Tattersalls ring just before 9pm last night tried to bid on the colt with a client of David Nicholls, California trainer Ben Cecil, Brendan Holland of Grove Stud, Dermot Farrington, representing Hong Kong interests, and Anthony Stroud among those to make a play for him.

New Zealand agent Paul Moroney offered 475,000gns for him while Tattersalls' marketing manager Jason Singh, acting for Jehan Malherbe's South African-based Form Bloodstock, was blown out at 500,000gns as Al-Malki came in with his only bid.

"We were looking for a good horse and this was the best in the sale. He ticked all the boxes for us," said Al-Malki, who trains in Qatar and is advised by former trainer Conrad Allen and Armando Duarte. "He's been bought for Hassan Ali Abdul Malik and will be based in Qatar but might race at the Dubai Carnival before coming back to Europe next year. It's undecided where he'll be trained when he comes back."

Roger Teal's star two-year-old Surrey Star sold for 200,000gns early into the day when Gordian Troeller and Californian trainer Jim Cassidy saw off Australian agent Guy Mulcaster for the Dubawi colt.
