Montmartre may have one foal next year

LAST year's impressive Grand Prix de Paris scorer Montmartre, who was retired to stand at the French National Stud this season but suffered from a lack of libido, managed to successfully impregnate one thoroughbred mare, according to a report on france-sire.com.

Bred by the late Jean-Luc Lagardere and bought by the Aga Khan as part of a lock, stock and barrel purchase of the former's breeding stock, Montmarte won three of his five starts including an impressive four-length victory in the Grand Prix de Paris.

One foal for Montmartre in 2010?

That win propelled him to the head of ante-post betting lists for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, but an injury sustained in the Grand Prix ruled him out of the race and ultimately forced him into an early retirement.

The in-foal mare is reportedly Passe Du Diable, a daughter of Kaldoun and the producer of one winner by Sea The Stars' half-brother Urban Ocean.

A son of Montjeu out of the Group 3-winning Linamix mare Artistique, Montmartre was syndicated into 50 shares and attracted a book of more than 100 mares when heretired to the Haras National du Pin.

After showing minimal interest in covering his potential mates, Montmarte was put out to grass over the summer. He recently covered five non-thoroughbred mares who were put into season specifically for the purpose of testing his fertility, and he successfully got four in foal.
