Group 1 winner
Platini dead

GROUP 1 winner Platini, sire of this season's Prix Noailles winner Grandcamp, has been put down at the age of 20 due to major heart problems. The son of Surumu stood the past season at Gestut Harzburg in Germany for €4,000.

Platini won nine of his 17 starts for Stall Steigenberger including the Group 1 Gran Premio di Milano and Group 1 Prels Der Privatbanklers Merc by a head from Snurge. He was also twice second in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden and ran fourth in the Japan Cup.

However, an amibtious crack at the 1993 King George failed to come to fruition when the colt trailed in last of ten to Opera House.

At stud, Platini was a reasonable success with the winners of more than 900 races to his credit, including many over jumps. To date, he has sired ten Group winners led by the Group 2 Deutsches St Leger winner Moonlady.

He is also the damsire of last Sunday's Oaks d'Italia winner Night of Magic.
