Passion For Gold sold to stand in Chile
PASSION FOR GOLD, the French champion two-year-old of 2009, has been sold to stand at José Luis Gatica's Haras Puerta de Hierro in Chile in a deal brokered by Chad Schumer of Schumer Bloodstock.
The six-year-old becomes the first son of Medaglia d'Oro to stand in South America.
Trained by Saeed bin Suroor on behalf of Godolphin, Passion For Gold won his two-year-old debut, a maiden at Thirsk, by five lengths before finishing a creditable third to champion St Nicholas Abbey in the Group 2 Beresford Stakes.
He was stepped up to Group 1 company for his final juvenile start, the Criterium de Saint-Cloud, and repaid connections' faith by coasting home under Frankie Dettori to win by six lengths.
Such was his domination of the Criterium de Saint-Cloud that Coral bookmakers installed him at 10/1 for the Epsom Derby. He was later supplemented for the Classic at a cost of £8,000 but was forced to miss the race after straining back muscles.
He returned in May 2011 to run out the 2 ½ length winner of the Listed Tapster Stakes at Goodwood.
In all, Passion For Gold won three of seven starts and £173,206 in prize-money.
"We're very thankful to Darley for the opportunity to purchase such an outstanding champion as Passion For Gold," said Schumer. "He will be well supported by some of the leading breeders in Chile and we are currently fielding offers for a northern hemisphere lease."
One of nine Group or Grade 1 winners by leading sire Medaglia D'Oro, Passion For Gold is out of the Grade 2 Nassau County Handicap winner and Grade 1-placed C'Est L'Amour, by Thunder Gulch.
He was purchased by Yeomanstown Stud for $125,000 as a yearling and resold at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-up Sale for 260,000gns to Dick O'Gorman.
Haras Puerta de Hierro was established in 2002 by Dr. Jose Luis Gatica, who as manager of Haras de Pirque was influential in launching the stud career of leading sire Hussonet.
The stud has featured among the top 25 breeders in Chile for each of the past three seasons and is the breeder of recent Group 1 Gran Premio Latinoamericana Indumotora-Falabella winner Sabor A Triunfo.
Passion For Gold will stand alongside Neko Bay, Mash One, Kappa King and Pavarotti at Haras Puerta de Hierro.
