Long Run looks another jumps star for Cadoudal

KEMPTON may have been buzzing after the manner of Kauto Star's win in the King George Chase on Saturday but racegoers also witnessed a scintillating performance earlier in the day when another French-bred, Long Run, cruised to victory in the Feltham Novices Chase.

Long Run, who is yet another high-class runner by the deceased Cadoudal, was having his first run for Nicky Henderson after a glittering career in France that included two Grade 1 victories, and he created a very favourable impression under Sam Waley-Cohen, who was riding for father and owner, Robert Waley-Cohen.

Waley-Cohen had initially settled Long Run at the back of the field, but through the first circuit he started to move ever closer, and coming past the stands for the first time, the pair were disputing second with Tazbar and James Reveley.

The fences down the back straight second time round proved tricky for both long time leader Tchico Polos and Long Run, as despite quickly pulling clear of Tazbar, they traded errors all the way to the end of the straight, which saw Ruby Walsh and Waley-Cohen eyeballing each other as they turned for home.

Long Run appeared to be travelling much the better, and so it proved, as Tchico Polos emptied at the third-last, his stamina giving out on his first try at three miles. Tazbar had been steadily getting back into contention, andalthough Long Run was still on the bridle, he gave favourite backers a scare at the penultimate fence when misjudging it badly.

However, the favourite met the last on a good stride and drew clear readily to take the spoils.

Second went to Tazbar at 9-2, while Ogee was third at 13-2.

Bred by Mme Benoit Gabeur in France, Long Run shares his sire with the exceptional staying hurdler Big Buck's as well as the likes of Kotkijet, Lacdoudal and Blue Shark.

Cadoudal, a Group 1-placed of Green Dancer, died in 2007 but has high-class stallion sons such as Saint Des Saints, Indian River (sire of King George VI Chase second Madison Du Berlais) and Robin Des Pres to maintain his influence.

Long Run is a half-brother to the talented racemare Liberthine (Chamberlin), who won the Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup at Cheltenham for the same connections, and a brother to Bica, who ran second in the Listed Prix Wild Monarch Hurdle at Auteuil as a three-year-old.

They are out of Libertina, a winning daughter of Balsamo from a family packed of successful jumpers incluidng J'y Vole, Aubisque and Full Of Ambition.

Libertina has a two-year-old filly by Malinas named Mathine while Liberthine has a 2008 filly by Hernando. Winning jockey Waley-Cohen was effusive in his praise for the winner. He said: "He's a fantastic horse, a really good horseand an exciting horse, it's good to be on him. He's pretty fast and he doesn't loose a lot of momentum [when he hits them]. He doesn't like backing off them and he's got masses of scope and massesof talent."

Henderson was also pleased and said: "You don't see many pulling up in a Grade 1 like that. He's got to get his English better than his French [jumping]. There's still some French habits in there and when he getsone wrong the first thought in his head is to get throughit. He will learn."

Later in the afternoon, Go Native maintained his position near the head of the Champion Hurdle market when holding off Starluck to win the Christmas Hurdle.

The Irish-bred gelding is the only winner out of the unraced Be My Native mare Native Idea, who has a 2009 sister to Go Native.

Bred by P. J. Murphy in Ireland, Go Native is the leading jumps performer by Prix Vicomtesse Vigier winner Double Eclipse, a brother to Double Trigger who stands at Deelside Stud in County Limerick.
