Grade 1 hero Gemologist retires to WinStar

GEMOLOGIST, winner of this year's Grade 1 Wood Memorial, has been retired from racing and will stand at WinStar Farm in Kentucky next season.

The three-year-old is the latest notable recruit to WinStar for 2013, following Florida Derby hero Take Charge Indy and Arkansas Derby winner Bodemeister.

A $310,000 foal purchase by Maverick Racing LLC, Gemologist won both his starts at two for Todd Pletcher and WinStar Farm including the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes.

The son of Tiznow returned at three to take a Gulfstream allowance by seven lengths over Grade 1 winner Currency Swap before landing the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct from subsequent Grade 1 winner Alpha.

Consequently, he went off as one of the favourites for the Kentucky Derby but was unplaced behind I'll Have Another. It later emerged that he bruised a foot in the race.

Gemologist encountered a minor setback in his training last month and was sent to WinStar Farm for rehab. The decision to retire him was made after it was determined that he wouldn't make it back for any major races during the remainder of 2012.

He retires as the winner of five of seven starts and nearly $800,000 in earnings.

"Gemologist is one of the most talented horses WinStar has ever had the privilege to be a part of," said Elliott Walden, President & CEO at WinStar. "He's a grand-looking individual and displayed the speed, class and determination of Tiznow, who we believe is on his way to becoming a great sire of sires.

"It was a tough decision to retire him because he could have come back and raced at four. Our core business is stallions, and Gemologist follows in the path of Super Saver and Drosselmeyer - two other top three-year-olds that we were fortunate to race and bring home to stud. Both of those stallions have had overwhelmingly positive starts to their respective stallion careers, and we believe breeders will love Gemologist just as much."

By WinStar Farm stalwart Tiznow, Gemologist is a half-brother to Listed winner Clear Destiny and out of the winning Mr Prospector mare Crystal Shard. His stud fee will be set at a later date.
