Grade 1 winner Brother Derek off the mark

SANTA Anita Derby hero Brother Derek became the latest first-season sire to get off the mark when Captain Derek won a 5 1/2f maiden at Del Mar on Sunday.

Bred by Wayne G Lyster III, Captain Derek was a $32,000 purchase by Joe Ioia at the OBS April Two-year-olds in Training Sale in Florida earlier this year. He is the fourth winner out of Thunder Serenade, a winning Thunder Gulch half-sister to multiple British winner Duke Of Monmouth.

Brother Derek won six of 17 starts and over $1.6 million in prize-money topped the Grade 1 Hollywood Futurity and Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. The son of Benchmark stands at Airdrie Stud in Kentucky for $7,500.
