Golden win for Lonhro colt with Leigh roots

Golden Slipper Stakes (Group 1), 2yo, 6f

PIERRO (c Lonhro - Miss Right Note by Daylami)

Bred by Darley

ONE week on from supplying Dubai Gold Cup winner Opinion Poll andGerald Leigh's Ghislaine family was to the fore once again, this time by providing narrow Golden Slipper Stakes hero Pierro.

Gai Waterhouse's unbeaten colt powered home under Nash Rawiller to deny Snitzerland (bySnitzel) and the favourite Samaready (by More Than Ready) by a half-a-length to take the A$3.5 million event.

The fourth Group 1 winner by Darley's reigning Australian champion sire Lonhro, Pierro is the second foal out of Miss Right Note, a minor winner in France and Australia. Although bred by Darley and the product of a Darley-based sire and mare, Pierro does not carry the colours of his breeder; he was sold for A$115,000 (£74,693/€90,515) to David Kobritz of Musk Hill Farm at the 2010 Magic Millions National Weanling Sale (he was the most expensive of Darley's draft of 21) and resold for A$230,000 (£149,386/€181,031) to Waterhouse on behalf of Sydney owners Greg and Donna Kolivos at the following year's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

Lonhro's sire, Octagonal, has worked with this family before in the case of Miss Right Note's half-brother Laverock, who was the only Group 1 scorer sired by the stallion during his northern hemisphere seasons at Haras du Quesnay. They are out of Sky Song, a 1m4f winning Sadler's Wells daughter of Leigh's 1992 Radley Stakes winner Criquette, who is also the dam of 2009 Ribblesdale Stakes heroine Flying Cloud.

In turn, Criquette is out of Leigh's high-class mare Ghislaine and a half-sister to his Queen Elizabeth II Stakes hero Markofdistinction, who was also Frankie Dettori's first Royal Ascot winner when successful in the 1990 Queen Anne Stakes.

Ghislaine is also the granddam of Godolphin's high-class stayer Opinion Poll.

The second daughter of Daylami to produce a Group 1 winner following Tariysha, the dam of Arcano, Miss Right Note has a 2011 sister to Pierro.

Champion Lonhro stood the past southern hemisphere season for A$77,000. He is currently standing his first northern hemisphere season at Darley's Jonabell Farm in Kentucky for $30,000.
