Doncaster Carnival Sale hit by withdrawals

DONCASTER’S first St Leger Carnival Sale after racing on Friday night offering a selection of Flat horses in training was over in less than hour although it will not go down as one of the more memorable auctions to take place in South Yorkshire.

A total of 27 lots made an appearance, ofwhich 13 just sold (48 per cent) for a total of £265,000 and average of £20,385.
David Nicholls was the busiest buyer and paid £40,000 to see off Richard Guest for six-year-old Lowther, offered fromAlan Bailey’s stable.

"He’s for a new client and could end up in Dubai," said Nicholls, who also picked up Dunn’o for £25,000 when appearing from Clive Cox’s yard. "Alan’s a good trainer and I’ll talk to him about the horse and then plan what we’ll do. I’m trying to gather a few together for Dubai."

The dearest lot listed as sold was two-year-old Swift Encounter, an easy Beverley maiden winner who was knocked down to his trainer Ann Duffield for £50,000.

"He’s been bought back," said Duffield. "He’s a nice horse and if we’d got a bit more than £50,000 we might have sold him but at least we’ve got a value on him now.

Henry Beeby: "huge interest"

"He’s come on a lot for his Beverley run and he will probably just have one more start this yearover a mile on soft ground somewhere. He’s going to be a really good horse next year."

Among those not to change hands were Moran Gra (£160,000 not sold) and two-year-old Misty Conquest (unsold at £95,000), and DBS managing director Henry Beeby admitted that the sale’s future would be discussed.

"We would maintain this sale has potential with when it is and where it is and there was trade at a level. We had huge interest when the catalogue came out but were hit by a couple of high-profile withdrawals," said Beeby.

"The sale has not quite made the start we hoped for but we will talk to vendors and buyers about what we do in the future."
