Kilboy homebred snatches Grade 1 mile

Saturday: Santa Anita; Frank E. Kilroe Mile H'cap (G1)

GIO PONTI (4 c Tale Of The Cat - Chipeta Springs)

CASTLETON Lyons may have another name to add to their stallion roster in the near future after the deserved first Grade 1 success by their homebred Gio Ponti in this turf feature.

Bred under the name of Kilboy Estates, the four-year-old colt is the second US stakes winner and third worldwide this season by the Grade 2 winner Tale Of The Cat, who stands at Ashford Stud for $30,000.

The 15-year-old Tale Of The Cat has spent the entirety of his northern hemisphere stud career at Ashford, where his fee has fluctuated between $25,000 and $65,000. He has also been a regular shuttler to the southern hemisphere and was crowned the champion first crop sire in New Zealand in 2003.

Gio Ponti is the sixth Group/Grade 1 winner for his sire following Lion Heart, Glamour Puss, Tell A Tale, My Trusty Cat and last season's Cigar Mile winner Tale Of Ekati.

Until Gio Ponti emerged, Tale Of The Cat had enjoyed limited success when bred to Raise A Native line mares - Grade 2 winners Spellbinder and Alpha Kitten, whose dams both descend from Fappiano, and Grade 3 winner Catboat are the only other stakes winners bred on this cross.

However, the Storm Cat - Alydar cross is one which has worked well in the past, producing the Grade 1 winners Cat Thief, Catinca, Madcap Escapade, Storm Flag Flying, November Snow, Diplomat Lady and Aldiza.

Chipeta Springs was a talented filly on the track in the US, taking two races and running third in the Listed Azalea Stakes.

But she has proven to be an even better producer, as from ten runners, she has produced seven winners including last season's dual stakes-winning US two-year-old Bon Jovi Girl (Malibu Moon) and Listed winner Fisher Pond (A P Indy).

As would be expected from a member of the Kilboy broodmare band, she owns a strong background as a daughter of the Argentine Group 1 winner Salt Spring and half-sister to the Grade 3-placed Salt Ridge (Cox's Ridge).

She is also a half-sister to Salty Girl, dam of the Grade 1-placed pair Mongoose and Hesanoldsalt.

Chipeta Springs has a two-year-old colt by Malibu Moon.
