Grade 1 winner Frost Giant retired to stud

THE six-year-old Grade 1-winning son of Giant's Causeway Frost Giant has been retired to stud and will stand at Empire Stud in Hudson, New York.

The winner of four of 15 career starts and $454,630, his Grade 1 success came in the Suburban Handicap last summer when beating Solar Flare by a half length.

Bought as a yearling by agent Demi O'Byrne at the 2004 Keeneland September Sale for $600,000, Frost Giant began his career in Ireland with Aidan O'Brien where he won the Kilternan Stakes (Gr3) and the Killanullan Stakes (Gr3).

He was then purchased by IEAH Stables and partner Andy Cohen in the October of three-year-old career. He went on to finish fourth at four in the Skip Away Stakes (Gr3) before his success in the Suburban Handicap.

He is the first foal from the mare Takesmybreathaway (Gone West), a daughter of the Seattle Slew mare Oscillate, herself a half-sister to champion Rhythm (Mr. Prospector) and the dam of Kentucky stallion Mutakddim (Seeking the Gold).

Oscillate is also closely related to graded stakes winners Daydreaming and Accelerator. Grade 1 winner Bluegrass Cat (Storm Cat) descends from the same female family, making him a close relative to Frost Giant.

"Frost Giant was a very talented and versatile racehorse winning on dirt and turf from seven furlongs to a mile and a quarter," said Michael Iavarone, president of IEAH. "We are supporting him with mares and look forward to racing his babies."

"Frost Giant is an obvious horse for New York," said Jamie LaMonica, president of Empire Stud. "This is a blue-blooded commercial pedigree which represents the Phipps' at their finest Frost Giant offers a breeder from any state, a sire whose progeny should excel in the sales ring and on the racetrack."
