Retired Icon Project to visit Giant's Causeway

GRADE 1-WINNING mare Icon Project, who started her career with Brian Meehan, will have Giant's Causeway as her first mate following news that she has been retired through injury.

The 13-and-a-half length winner of the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga in August has failed to overcome a tendon injury, trainer Marty Wolfson confirmed.

Icon Project had been a 7-1 chance for next month's Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic.

"She's had a small lesion in her tendon since running over a muddy racetrack winning the New York Handicap earlier this year," said Wolfson, who trained the first-crop daughter of Empire Maker for Andrew Rosen.

"But the area really changed significantly since she returned here and worked a couple of times following her victory in the Personal Ensign.

"She wasn't going to run in the Breeders' Cup regardless of this injury because I just didn't want to race her over the artificial surface," said Wolfson. "But Mr. Rosen was going to bring her back as a five-year-old in 2010."

Icon Project, a $775,000 yearling, won a maiden at Haydock last year, then ran third to Dar Re Mi in a Listed race at Newmarket before export to the USA. She is a half sister to six winners out of the mare La Gueriere, a Grade 1 winner on turf.
