New winner for 2002 Horse of the Year Azeri

ARIENZA became the second starter and second winner for 11-time Grade 1 scorer and 2002 Horse of the Year Azeri with an impressive victory at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas on Sunday.

Making her racing debut in a 6f event, three-year-old chestnut filly Arienza was sent off the 9-10 favourite and made no mistake, taking up the running turning for home and staying on strongly to record a two-and-a-half length victory.

Arienza is by Giant's Causeway and was bred by the Allen E. Paulson Living Trust. She was bought by her current owners Robert and Lawana Low for $800,000 at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling sale.

Arienza was making a belated racing debut after developing a chip in her left front knee last summer.

Azeri is also dam of four-year-old Take Control, by A. P. Indy. He went unsold at $7.7 million as a yearling but sold for $1.9m at two, and won his only start in December 2009, at Santa Anita.

Azeri, a daughter of Jade Hunter, also has a juvenile Ghostzapper filly called Wine Princess and a Distorted Humor yearling filly on the ground.
