Bank sues for champion Azeri's yearling filly

JUST a week after Ahmed Zayat reached an agreement with Fifth Third Bank on repaying debts to fend off repossession of bloodstock interests, news of another prominent American owner facing legal action has emerged.

PNC Bank has filed a claim against the Allen E. Paulson Living Trust for almost $1.6m and wants to seize champion Azeri's yearling filly by Ghostzapper.

Azeri was bred by Allen E. Paulson and was born two years before the businessman and philanthropist's death in 2000. She raced for the trust and won 11 Grade 1 races between the ages of four and six.

PNC has alleged in a lawsuit filed in a Lexington court on  February 12 that the trust defaulted on a loan by "among other things, failing to make payments on the principal and interest that was due."

Collateral includes Azeri's yearling filly by Ghostzapper, who had been catalogued for the Keeneland January sale but was withdrawn after her half-brother Take Control made a winning debut in December.

Azeri was sold to Katsumi Yoshida in Japan for $2.25m at last year's Keeneland November sale.
