Successful US breeder J. Robert Harris Jr dies
J. ROBERT HARRIS JR, the breeder of 2005 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Baby Zip, died on New Year's Day aged 91.
Harris bred Baby Zip out of his Tri Jet mare Thirty Zip, who carried Harris' colours to victory in eight stakes races. She also ran second in the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga.
Sent to Relaunch, Thirty Zip produced minor stakes winner Baby Zip, who later found fame as the dam of 2004 US Horse of the Year Ghostzapper as well as Grade 1 winner and successful sire City Zip.
Harris also bred or owned the US stakes winners Covert Operation, Gin Rummy Champ, Lucette and Rehoboth.
Born in Washington D.C., Harris served as an officer with the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force during World War II. He was later president of the womenswear retailer Joseph R. Harris Company in Washington, which was founded by his father.
