Daughter of Azeri heads Keeneland entries

THE third foal out of US Horse of the Year Azeri, a weanling filly by Ghostzapper, heads a catalogue of 1,753 horses for the Keeneland January Sale in Kentucky, which is set for January 11-15.

Thecatalogue is 26 per cent smaller than the 2009 renewal when 2,379 horses were entered. Of those initial entries,1,712 made it to the ring, where 1,338, or 78 per cent, were sold for an aggregate of $32,824,000 - less than half of the 2008 total. The average also suffered, falling 53 per cent to $24,532.

Grade 1 winner Island Fashion and the Grade 3-placed Almonsoon shared top billing, selling for $950,000 apiece.

Azeri's latest foal is consigned by Hill 'n' Dale Sales Agency, who sent through the mare at the last renewal when she was bought back for $4.4m by the Allen E. Paulson Living Trust.

Azeri was subsequently sold at the Keeneland November Sale for $2.25m to Katsumi Yoshida.

Ghostzapper's half-sister Casperina is one of 44 horses catalogued from Frank Stronach's Adena Springs.

Also likely to create a stir is an Afleet Alex half-brother to leading US two-year-old and Classic candidate Lookin At Lucky.

A host of proven producers have been entered including Glasgows Gold, the dam of this season's Grade 1 Ruffian Handicap winner Swift Temper, Lovely Martha, the dam of Grade 1 winner Sand Springs, and the Grade 1-placed Tuzia, the dam of exciting two-year-old Buddy's Saint.

Grade 3 winner and track record holder Necessary Evil tops the racing prospects on offer, a group which also includes Lingfield Oaks Trial third Tottie and Pfeiffer, a StormCat daughter of 1,000 Guineas runner-up Sundrop.
