German stallion Aeskulap put down

GERMAN Group 2 winner Aeskulap was put down earlier this week at Gestüt Sommerberg near Saarbrücken in west Germany due to an incurable kidney disease. He was 13.

The son of outstanding German sire Acatenango beat Albaran and Anzillero to win the 1m3f Hansa Preis in 2001. He also finished runner-up in the Gerling-Preis twice and also in the German St Leger.

Aeskulap was originally retired to stud in Gestüt Wieselbornerhof in 2003 and was transferred to Sommerberg in 2005. He had been advertised at a fee of €1,000 this year.

He is the sire of a handful of winners on the continent, including Derwisch, owned and bred by Sommerberg and fourth in last year's Czech Derby and runner-up to Deutsches Derby fifth Quo Dubai in the Grosser Preis der Eilert-Bauunternehmung.
