Unique filly to provide theatre at Tattersalls

TATTERSALLS will play host to a few minutes of intense theatre later today when lot 405, a daughter of George Washington, takes up her engagement in the sale ring.

It was five years ago this week that George Washington himself topped this sale when selling for 1,150,000gns to Demi O'Byrne.

The February-born filly is the only living offspring by her ill-fated sire, who made a dramatic and ultimately tragic return to racing after failing to get most of his first-year book of mares in foal at Coolmore.

The filly is consigned by Gerry Burke's Glidawn Stud, who purchased her for €280,000 from breeder Agricola Loreto Luciani at last year's Goffs November Foal Sale.

As could be expected from one of 'Gorgeous George's' first book, she hails from a high-class female family as a half-sister to Group 3 winner Ombre Legre and the Group 1-placed Flawly, who later produced Prix du Jockey-Club runner up Best Name.

In an interview with the Racing Post earlier this month, Burke explained his own attraction to the filly. He said: "George Washington was a tremendous horse who had a great following. There were a lot of people who followed him and many in particular who were thrilled by his character. And who knows? He could have been the next Danehill."

He added: "I've not been around anything like this filly before. She'sdeveloped well over the winter and is a very straightforward, confident lady - she isn't frightened of much. She loves the attention and has a great presence, which makes showing her very easy."
