Galileo filly lights up Arqana at €1.7 million

THE million euro barrier was broken in spectacular style during the early hours of the second session ofthe Arqana August Yearling Sale on Tuesday when Michael Goodbody outbid Grant Pritchard-Gordon at €1.7 million for a daughter of Galileo from Haras de la Perelle (138).

The filly, who is the first foal out of the Group 3-placed Sanjida, herself a half-sister to Sarafina, was bought on behalf of Australian owner Paul Fudge of Waratah Thoroughbreds. She is likely to be trained in France, where Fudge has horses with Andre Fabre and Carlos Laffron-Parias.

"She was without doubt the best yearling in the sale," said Goodbody. "We're always looking for top prospects and with a filly like her - she has the sire, the page and the looks - there is the possibility that you might have to pay over the odds. I'd say €1.7 million was about our limit."

Just moments earlier, Goodbody had gone to €500,000 for another Galileo yearling, a colt out of Beverly D Stakes heroine Royal Highness. His sale marked yet another success for leading consignor Ecurie des Monceaux.

"He's a lovely colt with a stallion's pedigree," said Goodbody. "He'll also stay in France and once we've finished buying, we'll decide where they'll go."

Fudge, who was ranked by Forbes.com last year as the 38th richest man in Australia, has been an active player at auctions worldwide in recent years, particularly at Keeneland last November when he paid a total of $2.92 million for seven horses. They were led by Elusive Sparkle, an Elusive Quality half-sister to Street Sense who cost $1.2 million.

According to Forbes.com, former fabric trader Fudge sold a coal seam gas exploration permit to Australian energy company Origin Energy for $466-million.

Breeder Haras de la Perelle was founded in 1995 by Jurgen H. Winter. The Normandy-based farm is home to 28 mares including last season's E P Taylor Stakes heroine Reggane, who was covered by Dansili this season.
