Galileo date for $4.2m buy Christmas Kid

MARES  that are part of the complete dispersal of the estate Edward P Evans continued to prove popular in the opening session of the Keeneland November Sale on Monday, as Christmas Kid sold to Coolmore for $4.2 million.

By Lemon Drop Kid, Christmas Kid won the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes in 2007. The seven--year-old mare is out of the multiple graded stakes-winning Green Desert mare Christmas Gift and was offered in foal to Bernardini.

“She most likely will go home to Galileo,” said Aisling Duignan, director of sales for Coolmore's North American division, Ashford Stud. “That is what she was bought for. (The price) was a little bit more than expected, but she was so good looking and when a mare gets a good first foal like that, you have to pay attention.”

Lane's End is acting as agent for the complete dispersal of Evans' Spring Hill Farm. The leading owner/breeder died on January 31 last year.

Earlier, Evans'  Grade 1 winner Buster's Ready sold to Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, while Frank Stronach's Adena Springs purchased Grade 1 winner Cat Moves for the same price.

Buster's Ready won this year's Mother Goose to notch her Grade 1 victory. By More Than Ready, she is out of the unraced mare Beatem Buster, who is a half-sister to 2005 North American Horse of the Year Saint Liam.

"This was really the mare they wanted in the sale," said Pierre-Yves Bureau, the Wertheimer's racing manager.  "We don't have the opportunity to buy these kinds of mares every year. Because of the dispersal, we have a lot of choice but this one was the big No. 1, and we are happy to get her."

Although plans are not final, Buster's Ready is likely to remain in the United States and be bred next spring.

Cat Moves, who won the Grade 1 Prioress Stakes in 2009, is pregnant to Malibu Moon and is expecting her first foal. The five-year-old Tale of the Cat mare is a half-sister to stakes winner Dance Hall Days.

"The price was OK," said Stronach. "It was a nice pedigree; nice racemare. Physically we liked her a lot."

Two seven-figure horses passed through the ring  in quick succession. Weekend Strike sold to David Nagle's Barronstown Stud for $2.3 million, while a weanling half-sister to 2010 American Horse of the Year Zenyatta sold for $1.5 million to Frank Stronach's Adena Springs.

Weekend Strike was offered in foal to Quality Road.

“It's a dispersal and that's the market value of her,” said Nagle about his purchase. “There will be a lot of big prices here today.”

Nagle added it was undetermined if Weekend Strike would be sent to his farm Ireland and did not disclose if he was the sole purchaser of the mare.

It came as no surprise a half-sister to Zenyatta would bring plenty of interest.

"Sometimes there is no limit," said Stronach when asked about the purchase price. "She's one of a kind."

Select Sales, agent, consigned the bay Henrythenavigator filly. Out of the Kris S. mare Vertigineux, the weanling is also a half-sister to grade 1 winner Balance.

By Smart Strike, Weekend Strike is a half-sister to Court Vision, who won the Breeders' Cup Mile over the weekend. Her dam, Weekend Storm, is a half-sisterto perennial leading sire A. P. Indy.

Grade 1-placed Spritely was bought by Chester Broman, a leading New York breeder, for $850,000. The six-year-old Touch Gold mare  was offered in foal toBernardini.

"We kind of knew that is what she was going to bring," said bloodstock agent Becky Thomas.  "Mr. Broman is a huge Bernardini fan, so he is very excited. She was one of our top picks and we are very excited to get her back to New York."

Spritely was consigned by Lane's End, agent for the complete dispersal of the estate of Edward P. Evans.

Out of the stakes-winning Woodman mare Wood Sprite, Spritely is a half-sister to grade 3 winner Ailalea. She will be bred back to Girolamo.
