Rip Van Winkle is 'great' addition to Coolmore

COOLMORE manager Eddie Fitzpatrick has spoken of how the Coolmore roster should thrive with the addition of a top-class son of Galileo such as Rip Van Winkle, whose retirement from racing was announced in the Racing Post on Wednesday.

The four-year-old will become the first son of Galileo to stand alongside his sire at Coolmore when he takes up stud duty next season.

“It’s great to stand a son of Galileo at Coolmore,” said Fitzpatrick, “especially as Rip Van Winkle has the highest Timeform rating of any son of Galileo. A figure of 134 rates him the equal of his sire and 2lbs superiorto Galileo’s Derby winner New Approach.

“As well as winning three Group 1 races, he was the only horse who made Sea The Stars pull out all the stops when they clashed in the Eclipse Stakes. He was also precocious enough to win a Group race as a two-year-old before the end of July.”

Successful in the Sussex Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes as a three-year-old, Rip Van Winkle became one of seven Group 1 winners worldwide by Galileo this season when taking the Juddmonte International at York.

Another is Khalid Abdullah’s brilliant two-year-old Frankel, a further successful example of Galileo working well when crossed with Danehill. Such results suggests that Rip Van Winkle will be an ideal mate for such mares, as general manager Christy Grassick explained.

“Rip Van Winkle looks guaranteed to work very well with mares that have Danehill or Danzig blood,” he said, “and he should prove a great asset to the many breeders who can no longer access Galileo’s services.”

The first foal out of the Listed-placed Looking Back, a daughter of former Coolmore Kentucky resident Stravinsky, Rip Van Winkle descends from the champion two-year-old Mesopotamia, also the ancestress of successful stallion Halling and champion New Zealand sire Volksraad.
