Pegasus emulates sire in San Felipe Stakes

PREMIER PEGASUS confirmed himself one of Calfornia's top Kentucky Derby hopes with a visually impressive victory in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita.

The Myung KwonCho-trained colt took up the running from the home turn and stretched clear to win by seven and three-quarter lengths from last year's Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes winner Jaycito, with Bench Points and Comma To The Top filling the third and fourth places.

Premier Pegasus joins an illustrious roll of honour for the San Felipe: Affirmed, Sunday Silence, Bertrando, Medaglia D'Oro and Point Given all took the race en route to establishing themselves as household names.

So did Premier Pegasus's sire Fusaichi Pegasus, who won the San Felipe in 2000 before landing the Kentucky Derby and Wood Memorial Stakes.

Fusaichi Pegasus - a son of Mr Prospector out of a Listed-placed sister to Preakness Stakes winner Pine Bluff - was one of the most hyped new retirees to stud in 2001.

He joined Coolmore's Ashford Stud in Kentucky at a fee of $150,000. His first crop yielded Norfolk Stakes winner Roman Ruler, Blue Grass Stakes winner Bandini and Belmont Stakes third Andromeda's Hero.

Another of Fusaichi Pegasus's best US-bred runners has come from his fifth crop, last year's Grade 1 Clement L Hirsch Turf Championship scorer and Breeders' Cup Turf runner-up Champ Pegasus.

It is foals left from Fusaichi Pegasus's shuttling to Coolmore in Australia who have been two of his highest earners, though: Australian Group 1 winner and Queen Anne Stakes hero Haradasun and Hong Kong Group 1-winning miler Floral Pegasus.

Pegasus Prince is also owned and bred by Myung Kwon Cho. He is out of the Summer Squall mare Squall Linda, making him a half-brother to Grade 1 Norfolk Stakes winner and Vinery Kentucky stallion Street Hero.
