LUCKY NINE (5 g Dubawi - Birjand by Green Desert)

Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (Group 1), 3yo+, 7f

Bred by Darley in Ireland

THE power of the Dubawi - Green Desert cross was again highlighted on Sunday when the Darley-bred Lucky Nine ran out a head winner of the Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup at Sha Tin in Hong Kong.

The alliance between Dubawi and Green Desert first came to the fore in 2010 through top miler Makfi and has since been evident through 2,000 Guineas runner-up Dubawi Gold.

One of seven winners at the top level worldwide by Dubawi, who stands for £75,000 at Dalham Hall Stud, Lucky Nine is half-brother to last year's Japanese Group 2-placed two-year-old Sudden Storm (by Storming Home). They are out of Birjand, a triple-winning daughter of 1994 Moyglare Stud Stakes heroine Belle Genius.

The gelding was a bargain €9,000 purchase at the 2008 Tattersalls Ireland September Sale by Andrew Oliver.
