Friesan Fire retired to stud in Maryland

FRIESAN FIRE, winner of the 2009 Louisiana Derby and favourite for that year's Kentucky Derby, has been retired and will enter stud at Merryland Farm in Maryland.

The son of A.P. Indy has been placed into a syndicate comprised of Tom Simon's Vinery Farm, Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farms and the Pons family's Country Life Farm.

His fee for the 2012 breeding season at the Pons' Merryland Farm has been set at $4,000.

Friesan Fire was bred in Kentucky by Vinery's breeding division Grapestock LLC out of the Dehere mare Bollinger, a Group 1 winner in Australia.

Friesan Fire scored a front-running three-length victory on his career debut at Delaware Park at two, before finishing third in the Grade 2 Futurity Stakes at Belmont.

A half-interest in him was subsequently sold to Fox Hill Farms, in whose silks he won the Grade 3 LeComte Stakes, the Grade 3 Risen Star Stakes and the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby by seven and a half lengths.

Those victories saw Friesan Fire sent off favourite for the Kentucky Derby, but he was well beaten and found to have suffered a foot injury.

After a seven-month layoff, he won the 2010 Louisiana Handicap. He retires with a record of five wins, one second, and three thirds from 18 starts.

"We have been searching for a successor to Malibu Moon, a son of A.P. Indy who we started at stud here at Country Life," said Josh Pons. "Both colts are out of Group 1-winning mares. Both colts won early as two-year-olds.

"The pedigrees of both colts nick well with the broodmare population in the Mid-Atlantic region. With slots finally arriving in Maryland, he's the right horse at the right time. Everyone involved with the horse is anxious to support him at stud."
