First winners for Cherokee Run sons

LATE freshman sire War Pass was represented by his first winner when his son Java's War landed a 1m maiden at Ellis Park in America on Sunday.

Java's War is out of the British-bred winning Rainbow Quest mare Java, a sister to 1998 champion female turf champion Fiji and a half-sister to Poule d'Essai des Poulains second Marcus Andronicus.

The Kenneth McPeek-trained colt was improving on his debut fifth on the Churchill Downs turf last month.

A son of Cherokee Run, War Pass was champion US juvenile in 2007 after winning the Champagne Stakes and Breeders' Cup Juvenile, in which he beat Pyro by nearly five lengths.

War Pass stood at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky for two seasons until his death after returning from shuttling to Widden Farm in Australia in 2010.

His first northern-hemisphere crop numbers 65 foals.

Another first-season sire son of Cherokee Run off the mark at the weekend was Chelokee, who won the Grade 3 Northern Dancer Breeders' Cup Stakes in 2007.

Chelokee's first winner was Lady Kee, who won a maiden special weight at Prairie Meadows.
