Adena Springs sale gets underway on Monday

TWO more US breeze-ups are set to run this week, beginning with the Adena Springs Sale near Ocala, Florida on Monday.

It has not been a good start to the year for Adena Springs owner Frank Stronach, although his operation received two Eclipse Awards, as champion owner and champion breeder, in January.

Stronach is chairman of the recently bankrupt Magna Entertainment Corp., the operator of a number of racetracks including three that have hosted Breeders' Cup meetings - Gulfstream Park, Lone Star Park, and Santa Anita Park. Magna also owns Pimlico, home of the Preakness Stakes.

Adena Springs is not part of the Magna holdings. However, the two-year-old sale, which has been a fixture since 2002, was to be wiped from the calendar after Adena Springs announced its cancellation last autumn, saying the operation would instead focus on selling yearlings. Adena Springs sold 111 horses at last year's Keeneland September Sale. However, some time after that sale it reversed the decision to cancel.

A catalogue of 70 has been compiled for today's sale, set to start at 4.30pm local time. It features mainly the progeny of Adena Springs stallions, with 11 lots from Horse of the Year Ghostzapper's first crop, ten from leading sire Awesome Again, six by Sadler's Wells's top North American sire son, El Prado, and five from the first crop of 2004 Derby winner North Light.

There is also a filly by Montjeu out of the winning Red Ransom mare Champagne Cocktail, a colt by Singspiel out of the black-type earner Exact, by Twining, and a Tiznow filly out of a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Pirate's Revenge. The family received a timely update when Life Is Sweet won Saturday's Grade 1 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap.

The auction rang in $5,283,500 for 97 horses sold last year, for an average price of $54,469 and a median of $28,000. The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company runs the sale at Adena Springs South, a day before its own two-day March Selected Sale begins at the OBS sales complex in Ocala.
