Cashmans prices out for first-season sire 2009

CASHMANS BOOKMAKERS has released its prices for the 2009 leading first-season sire and make the former champion juvenile, the Darley sire Shamardal, its 7/4 favourite.

Unbeaten and a top-class two-year-old, the son of Giant's Causeway rounded off his own juvenile career when winning the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes by two and a half lengths from fellow first-season sire Oratorio. In all, Shamardal won four Group 1 races, including the St James's Palace Stakes, and retired to Kildangan Stud in 2006. He covered 143 mares in his first season, of which 101 were winning mares.

Second-best in the betting is Oratorio, a Coolmore-based son of Danehill. He ran seven times as a juvenile, winning four races including the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. At three, he finished fourth in the 2,000 Guineas, second in the Irish 2,000 Guineas to Dubawi, a 6-1 chance for first-season honours, before winning the Eclipse and the Irish Champion Stakes from Motivator, another sire with his first crop running this year and a 14-1 shot with Cashmans. Oratorio covered 153 mares in 2006.

The Aga Khan Stud's Azamour, a 6-1 chance, and Ballylinch Stud's Whipper, who is priced at 7-1, are the only two non-Coolmore or Darley-based stallions at the top of the betting. Hot on their heels are another two from Coolmore - the 2,000 Guineas winner Footstepsinthesand, another son of Giant's Causeway, and the Danzig stallion Antonius Pius.

Thetwo first-season sires who have already got off the mark, Camacho, a Danehill stallion who stands at Morristown Lattin Stud, and Bearstone's Firebreak, a son of Charnwood Forest who sired the winner of the Brocklesby Stakes, are longer priced at 33-1 and 100-1 in this first show. Their prices are probably a reflection of their comparatively smaller booksizes in 2006: Camacho covered 57 mares and Firebreak just 48.

Cashman's decide the leading first-season sire by the number of individual winners sired through the turf Flat season in Britain and Ireland, March 27-November 27.
