Flat breeze-up for Brightwells at Ascot

BRIGHTWELLS will enter the juvenile auction market next year when they stage a new Flat breeze-up at Ascot in May.

The Brightwells Ascot Breeze-up Sale, the first auction of its kind hosted at the track for over 20 years, will be held after racing on Victoria Cup day on Saturday May 7. Horses will breeze on the jumps track in the morning before selling later that evening at the racecourse.

"We'd hope to catalogue around 60 to 70 quality lots," said Matt Mitchell, head of Brightwells Bloodstock. "In the current market conditions sales should reflect the needs of potential owners verses the traditional selling structures. A breeze-up sale in conjunction with a high profile race meeting will capitalise on the expectation that existing and potential owners will be racing."

Selling will take placein a temporary sales arena in the unsaddling enclosure used for unplaced horses while lots will be sold while on view in the pre-parade ring.

The announcement was warmly received yesterday by Willie Browne of Mocklershill Stables, whohas no fewer than 76 yearlings under his care.

"I'll definitely support the sale," he said. "Brightwells have upped their game quite a bit recently and are a good sales company. Staging it during a two-day meeting with high-profile races can only help, and it's central - the closer you are to those main airports and London the better."

Prominent vendor Con Marnane of Bansha House Stables was slightly more hesitant. He said: "With the Tattersalls Guineas sale being off there's probably an opening for a [breeze-up] sale in England.

"But I'm not sure how it will affect me as we're down from 55 to 35 horses. We usually buy horses for [specific] sales, so it would have been useful to have known about the sale earlier."

Nominations are currently being accepted and all lots will be eligible to run in Brightwells' new £25,000 Sales Race over 6 furlongs at the Ascot September meeting.
