Flashpoint provides sire with a first season boost

THERE are striking parallels between Fountain Of Youth Stakes winner Soldat and the lesser-known Flashpoint, who made an eye-catching stakes debut when running away with the Grade 2 Hutcheson Stakes, also at Gulfstream.

Both colts are now on course for the Florida Derby but a more notable comparison is that they are from the first crops of their sires.

Flashpoint's sire Pomeroy, who stands at Vinery South in Florida, has also produced exciting filly Pomeroy's Pistol, winner of the Grade 2 Forward Gal Stakes at Gulfstream on January 30, and California Derby winner Positive Response, a race that is staged on the Tapeta surface at Golden Gate Fields.

While there was much focus last season on the exploits of another Florida-based first-season sire - the now Kentucky-based Congrats - Pomeroy finished 2010 with 25 individual winners, equal to Congrats and Sharp Humor. He began his stud career at a fee of $10,000 but stands this year at $5,000.

Flashpoint went through the sales ring twice as a yearling, selling for $115,000 at the Keeneland January Horses Of All Ages sale and eight months later making $15,000 less at the Keeneland September Sale.
