First winner for Derby hero North Light

DERBY hero North Light sired his first winner on Sunday when North Ballade broke her maiden on her third attempt in Russia.

The filly, who was a $10,000 purchase at last year's Keeneland September Sale, won the Kuban Stakes, a Group 2 according to the Russian calendar run at Rostov-on-Don.

She is out of the winning Devil's Bag mare Betty B and a half-sister to a minor winner in the US and Canada.

North Light retired to Adena Spring in Kentucky as the winner of three races. As well as the 2004 Derby, he was also successful in the Dante Stakes and ran second in the Irish Derby.

The Ballymacoll-bred son of Danehill, who has 54 two-year-olds in his first crop, stood the past season for $15,000.
