First-crop sire
Fracas off the mark

FRACAS, winner of the 2005 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial for David Wachman, was represented by his first winner on Friday evening when Awakened Spirit won the 5f juvenile maiden at Tipperary.

The filly, who is also trained by Wachman, was always prominent under Wayne Lordan and stayed on well to deny Red Queen by a length-and-a-half. She is only the second runner for her sire, a son of In The Wings who stands at Cahermorris Stables for a private fee.

Bred by Joseph Joyce, Awakened Spirit is the second foal out of Rajani, a placed daughter of Johannesburg from the family of French Group 2 winner Signe Divin. She was unsold at last year's Goffs Open Yearling Sale.

Fracas was a tough and high-class performer for Wachman, winning five of 18 starts.  He was unraced at two but made rapid progress as a three-year-old, capturing his first three races including the Sandown Derby Trial and Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial. He also won the Meld Stakes as a four-year-old and ran second in the Rheinland-Pokal Stadtsparkasse Kolnbonn at Cologne.
