Figures soar as Keeneland nears end

MOMENTUM carried over into the final stages of the Keeneland September Sale in Kentucky on Friday as both the gross and average soared 47 per cent during the opening day of Book 6.

Keeneland sold 197 horses for a total of $1,860,800, up 47 per cent from 2010 when the same number of horses brought $1,261,600. The average increased 47 per cent to $9,446while the median leapt a major 103 per cent to $7,500.

The day was topped by a Fusaichi Pegasus colt who sold for $52,000 to Tim and Cyrstal Donohue. Consigned by William B. Harrigan, the colt is out of the Dixieland Band mare Whalah, and from the family of Grade 1 winners Firm Stance and Au Bon Marche.

The sale concludes on Saturday.
