Four Group winners
for Encosta De Lago

ALTHOUGH he missed out on getting the winner of the day's big race in Australia, the Group 1 Randwick Guineas, Encosta De Lago certainly made his presence felt on the Australian stakes race scene being sire of no less than four Group winners on Saturday.

At Flemington, the Group 3 Patinack Farm Stakes for fillies and mares run over a mile, was won by Fifth Avenue Lady, a five-year-old daughter of the Coolmore sire and out of the Unbridled's Song mare Miss Jakeo.

Trainer Danny O'Brien said after the race that Fifth Avenue Lady may now be spelled but a final decision would be made after discussions with owner-breeder Gerry Harvey.

Later on the Flemington card, Largo Lad won the Group 2 Blamey Stakes, also run over a mile. Trainer David Hayes and owners Peter Devitt, Les Gordon and Scott Perrin paid a seven-figure sum for the horse 12 months ago and the gelding has since won three races for them, including two out of three at Flemington.

At Randwick, the stallion enjoyed both juvenile and older horse success. His two-year-old Manhattan Rain, who is trained by Gai Waterhouse, won the Group 3 6f Skyline Stakes, and last year's Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap winner, the seven-year-old gelding Newport, bounced backto form to win the 1m2f Group 3 Randwick City Stakes.

Encosta De Lago may have missed out on Group 1 success in the Guineas, but his sire Danehill hit the board being the grandsire of the Jack Denham-trained and Waikato Stud-bred winner Metal Bender, a son of Danasinga.

Danasinga stands at Baerami Thoroughbreds in the Hunter Valley and is out of Ahonoora mare Princess Tracy. As a four-year-old he won the Stradbroke Handicap and stands at a fee of A$16,500. MetalBender is his third Group 1 winner and he is to be aimed next at the AJC Australian Derby in April.
