Breeder: Iadora Farm in the US

NORTH LIGHT, the 2004 Derby winner, got a first-crop Group1 winner on the board when his son Arctic Cosmos landed the St Leger on Saturday.

North Light, a son of Danehill bred by Ballymacoll Stud out of Prix du Cadran winner Sought Out, won the Dante Stakes and Derby before running second toGrey Swallow in the Irish Derby.

At the end of his racing career he was bought by Frank Stronach to stand at his Adena Springs base in Kentucky.

Arctic Cosmos is by far the best runner to have emerged from North Light's first two crops, but he is not the only one. The sire has also been on the mark with Go Forth North, who dead-heated to win a Listed race at Del Mar last month, and Bodua, winner of a restricted race at Woodbine in October.

NorthLight retired at the top of the bloodstock market boom at a fee of €50,000, but in more financially-straitened times, stood at €15,000 this year.

Arctic Cosmos was bought by Blandford Bloodstock for 47,000gns in Book2 of the Tattersalls October yearling sale.

Bred in Kentucky by Iadora Farm, he is the first foal out of the Marquetry mare Fifth Avenue Doll, a ten-time winner in America, who in turn is out of the Alleged mare Allego, a half-sister to Grade 1-placed Castle Royale and to restricted race winner Beseech, ancestress of Grade 1 performers Naskra Colours and Sir Shackleton.
