Fasig-Tipton hosts Florida juvenile sale

SELLING starts at noon(local time) for Fasig-Tipton's first breeze-up of the year, which was relocated to the Palm Meadows training centre from Calder last year. The two-year-olds breezed on Friday.

Best remembered for hosting the $16 million sale of The Green Monkey to Demi O'Byrne in 2006, this sale comprises a selection of hand picked juveniles, thereby making it one of the most prestigious breeze-up auctions in the world.

While The Green Monkey's sale contributed to an average high of $403,812 in 2006, that sale was followed by three years of decline which was halted in 2010, when a nine per cent rise coincided with a tightening of numbers catalogued. Officials will be hoping that today's sale - at 167 lots, 30.5 per cent smaller than the 2011 renewal - can build on last year's average of $244,840, especially as the recent juvenile auctions at Barretts and OBS have suggested that confidence is returning to this sector of the market.

The auction is also riding high on the track with 2011 graduates such as Kentucky Derby favourite Union Rags and recent Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes heroine Eden's Moon flying the flag.

Both two-year-olds by Raven's Pass have been withdrawn but buyers still get the opportunity to assess the first juveniles by Henrythenavigator, Big Brown and Curlin.

Fastest times: lots 65 (f Malibu Moon - More Than Pretty) and 67 (c Lion Heart and Obligation North) ran a furlong in ten seconds on Friday

2011 results: 81 of 143 offered were sold for a total of $19,832,000 (-15%), average of $244,840 (-5%) and median of $200,000 (unchanged). Eight horses sold for $500,000 or above compared to 11 in 2010.

2011 top price: $1.35million paid by John Ferguson for an Empire Maker filly out of Half A P consigned by Murray Smith.
