Famous Name and Dragon to Irish National

FAMOUS NAME, who picked up an incredible 21st stakes victory at Leopardstown on Saturday, is to stand at the Irish National Stud next season, where the son of Dansili will be joined by Group 2-winning juvenile Dragon Pulse.

Famous Name retires after a 38-race career which ended with success in the Listed Trigo Stakes over 1m2f.

It came on the same day his juvenile sister Big Break won the Group 3 Killavullan Stakes for the same connections, owner-breeder Khalid Abdullah, trainer Dermot Weld and jockey Pat Smullen.

Now seven,  Famous Name was also beaten a head by Vision d’Etat in the 2008 French Derby.

Dragon Pulse is the highest-rated two-year-old by Kyllachy and had a seven-race race career highlighted by defeat of Dewhurst winner Parish Hall in the Galileo Futurity Stakes. He was last seen out when unplaced in the St James’s Palace Stakes.

“I am delighted with our new horses,” said Irish National Stud chief executive John Osborne. “Juddmonte [Abdullah’s breeding operation] needs no introduction nor does Famous Name, while Dragon Pulse comes from the amazing nursery of Owenstown, source of Gordon Lord Byron and Excelebration.”

Fees for the pair are likely to be announced later this week.

Famous Name ran only once outside stakes company, when a winner at Naas as a juvenile in July 2007.

“He is the third-highest rated son of Dansili and will appeal to breeders looking to produce a racehorse in his likeness,” Osborne said. “The breeders supporting him can earn a lifetime breeding right through their loyalty in the early years.”

Details of that initiative are available by contacting the stud.

Dragon Pulse was also narrowly beaten by Power in the Group 1 National Stakes. At three, he inflicted a first defeat on champion juvenile Dabirsim in the Prix de Fontainbleu.

Osborne said: “His physique and motion are certain to encourage breeders to use him. While the pedigree is full of familiar names [such as Middle Park winner Hayil] , he has only six per cent Northern Dancer blood and so presents an interesting option.”

Shares in the colt will be made available.
