Breeder: Darley in Australia

TWO weeks after landing the Group 1 Inglis Sires Produce Stakes, Darley homebred Helmet returned to Randwick to record his second Group 1 success, on this occasion in dramatic style at the expense of Pane In The Glass (by Testa Rossa) in the Champagne Stakes.

The favourite was well clear when he veered into the whip across the field inside the final furlong, causing Jim Byrne, rider of Pane In The Glass, to lodge an objection that was later dismissed.

The second Group 1 winner sired by shuttler Exceed And Excel following Blue Diamond Stakes scorer Reward For Effort, Helmet is bred on the same Exceed AndExcel - In The Wings cross as recent Winter Derby winner Nideeb. Sadler's Wells has also clicked with Exceed And Excel to produce Lowther Stakes winner Infamous Angel.

Exceed And Excel is currently standing for £12,000 at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket. However, the Group 1-winning son of Danehill commands the significantly greater figure of A$66,000 in his native Australia, where 20 of his 34 stakes winners have been bred.

A half-brother to recent Group 1Australian Guineas runner-up Bullbars (by Elusive Quality), Helmet is the second foal out of the unraced Accessories, a three-parts sister to French Group 2 winner Annaba.

The daughter of Singspiel is also a half-sister to the high-class French stayer Pozarica and Park Hill Stakes heroine Anna Of Saxony, herself the granddam of last season's Irish 1,000 Guineas runner-up Anna Salai. They are out of Anna Matrushka, a daughter of German champion Anna Paola who is also the ancestress of Grade 1 winner Ave and champion Anna Monda.
