Group 2 winner Wilander back in training

AUSTRALIAN Group 2-winning sprinter Wilander has been put back into training following a failed stint at stud.

The five-year-old son of of Exceed And Excel retired to Lindsay Park Stud last season at a fee of A$8,800 but failed to impregnate any of the 55 mares he covered, which has resulted in him being gelded and sent to David Hayes' yard.

A A$625,000 yearling purchase by John Ferguson, Wilander was formerly trained by Lee Freedman on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed, in whose colours he won the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes at Caulfield and the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude Stakes.

His removal from the Lindsay Park Stud roster is a blow to the operation as not only did he show high-class form but is also a three-parts brother to Group 1-winning Lindsay Park resident Magnus and a half-brother to Helsinge, dam of the outstanding Black Caviar.
