to relish St Leger trip

REBEL SOLDIER (c Danehill Dancer - En Garde by Irish River)

Breeder: En Garde Syndicate

REBEL SOLDIER maintained his upward curve of improvement to take this St Leger trial from the fast-finishing Dandino.

The colt is the ninth European stakes winner this year for last season's champion sire Danehill Dancer.

Whether Rebel Soldier will be just as effective over the St Leger trip of 1m6f is open to doubt, though.

Danehill Dancer was a Group 1 winner over 6f and 7f as a two-year-old and sired plenty of high-class fast horses such as Choisir and Monsieur Bond during his early years at stud. But he has later proved that when crossed with the right mare, he can sire classy middle-distance horses, with this season's Grand Prix de Paris runner-up Planteur being the most notable example.

None of Rebel Soldier's three minor winning siblings have won over further than 1m2f on the Flat although one, Rifleman, is a winner over hurdles.

Further dampening enthusiasm for his St Leger prospects is the fact his dam is a half-sister to Queen Elizabeth II Stakes winner Observatory and Group 3 winner High Praise, who was also high-class over 1m.

En Garde has a yearling filly by Danehill Dancer.
