Emergency colic surgery for Monarchos

MONARCHOS, who clocked the second fastest time in the Kentucky Derby when winning the Run for the Roses in 2001, was taken to Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky, for emergency colic surgery on Tuesday.

The 14-year-old grey son of Maria's Mon suffered another bout of colic in April 2011.

Monarchos retired to Claiborne Farm in Kentucky and moved to Charles Nuckols III's Nuckols Farm for the 2008 breeding season. His 2011 stud fee was $4,000.

Monarchos - who joined Secretariat as the only horse to run the Kentucky Derby in under two minutes - is sire of Madison Stakes, Humana Distaff and Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner Informed Decision and Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap winner Win Willy.
