Shock Guineas winner a new star for O'Reilly

Flemington: Australian Guineas (Group 1), 1m, 3yo f

SHAMROCK (f O'Reilly - Bohemian Blues by Blues Traveller)

Breeder: Mrs M. V. & V. Trillo

ELUSIVE Quality, sire of last week's Blue Diamond Stakes winner Sepoy, narrowly failed to add a second Group 1 winner to his record in as many Saturdays when his daughter Bullbars fell a length-and-a-quarter short to shock $31 winner Shamrock in the Australian Guineas at Flemington.

An excellent ride by Glen Boss, who was originally downto partner fourth reserve Abolutelyawesome, saw Shamrock become the ninth Group 1 winner by 2007-08 New Zealand champion sire O'Reilly.

O'Reilly won two Group 1 races en route to BMW Horse of the Year and champion sprinter miler honours in 1997. The son of Last Tycoon stands at Waikato stud in New Zealand for NZ$50,000, a figure second only to the NZ$100,000 commanded by Zabeel.

Three of O'Reilly's Group 1 winners are out of mares by Centaine, including champion Alamosa. However, Shamrock contains no Centaine blood, instead being out of a mare by 1993 Epsom Derby third and former Tally-Ho Stud resident Blues Traveller.

A NZ$65,000 yearling purchase by trainer Danny O'Brien, Shamrock is the only foal to race out of Bohemian Blues, a multiple-winning half-sister to Singapore Group 3 winner Fairy Tale. Bohemian Blues' yearling colt by Shinko King (a Fairy King half-brother to Dr Devious) sold for NZ$200,000 to Rogerson Bloodstock at the NZB PremierYearling Sale in February.

Runner-up Bullbars was bred by Darley out of Accessories, a British-bred Singspiel three-parts sister to Prix de Royallieu winner Annaba.
