June by Bernstein colt

A COLT by the former Aidan O'Brien-trained Bernstein produced fireworks on the opening day of the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company's June Two-year-old Sale in Florida on Tuesday, selling for an auction record of $300,000 to agent Patrice Miller on behalf of an undisclosed client.

The colt had worked a furlong in ten seconds flat during the under tack show on Saturday and provided consignor Robert Brewer with a memorable return on the $31,000 he had paid for the youngster at last year's Fasig-Tipton October Sale in Kentucky.

Catalogued within the first hour of the sale as lot 16, the colt is a half-brother to a minor winner in Canada and it out of Within, a daughter of Rahy from the family of Chief's Crown.

The Bernstein colt was one of seven lots to break six figures during a day which saw 66 per cent (159 lots) of horses offered sell for a total of $3,484,000. The average of $21,912 was virtually on a par with last year's renewal, which was staged over one day.

The dearest filly of the day was a daughter of Elusive Quality knocked down to Justice Family Racing LLC for $220,000. Paul Sharp consigned the filly, who is the second foal out of the stakes-placed French Deputy mare Di's Delight.

The sale concludes on Wednesday.
