Daughter of Sleepytime breaks maiden

DAME Ellen, the sixth foal out of 1997 1,000 Guineas heroine Sleepytime, broke her maiden at the second time of asking on turf on Wednesday when taking a $35,000 maiden special weight at Gulfstream Park.

The daughter of Elusive Quality, who is raced by her breeder Charles Wacker and trained by Chad Brown, was making her third start overall.

Her win comes six days after Sleepytime's celebrated dam, Alidiva, foaled a filly by Giant's Causeway at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky.

Dame Ellen is a half-sister to the popular Group 3 winner Gentleman's Deal, now a stallion in Russia, and Spanish Harlem, runner-up in the Gallinule Stakes for Aidan O'Brien.

Sleepytime is also the granddam of the stakes-placed trio Faslen, Dream Lodge and Splash Mountain.

Although lightly-raced, Sleepytime won nearly £150,000 in prize-money thanks to her win in the 1,000 Guineas for trainer Henry Cecil. She was also a luckless third to subsequent Oaks winner Reams Of Verse in the Fillies' Mile.

The daughter of Royal Academy was one of three Group 1 winners during the 1997 season out of Broodmare of the Year Alidiva following Sussex Stakes winner Ali-Royal and the globe-trotting Taipan.

Sleepytime has a two-year-old by Gone West and a yearling colt by Forestry.
