Tattersalls commissions HQ development report

TATTERSALLS has appointed Barton Willmore Planning Consultants to undertake an environmental and infrastructure capacity appraisal of Forest Heath District Council's plans to allocate land in north-east Newmarket for the construction of 1,200 houses.

The report will be submitted during the six-week consultation period which is due to commence before the endof March 2009, when Forest Heath releases its final draft core strategy, and will assess the likely impact of the proposed development on the racing industry and on the town of Newmarket.

The move comes after an annual meeting betweenTattersalls, various racing and breeding organisations, and the Save Historic Newmarket Action Group.

Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony said: "Tattersalls, as one of the oldest and most well established companies in the town, wishes to ensure that Newmarket retains its unique status as the headquarters of European racing.

"We are concerned that Forest Heath District Council is running the risk of misunderstanding the sometimes challenging requirements ofthe racing industry.

"There are plenty of examples where local councils have not appreciated the benefits of strategic industries in their localities when formulating their approaches to planning. The unhappy situation that has developed at Epsom is the most obvious and current example.

"We hope this report will be of assistance to Forest Heath District councillors, who will have to vote on these proposals, and will give them a greater insight into the requirements of the racing industry in Newmarket. Such improved understanding will be critical when framing policy to achieve the long-term economic success of this historic town."
