Boost for EmpireMaker's new Japanese owners

THE uncanny habit of a stallion enjoying notable success soon after being sold was further emphasised at Gulfstream Park with the victory of Soaring Empire in the Grade 3 Hal's Hope Stakes.

The four-year-old is by the Belmont Stakes winner Empire Maker, whose sale by his breeders Juddmonte Farm to stand in Japan was announced in November.

Empire Maker now stands at the Japan Bloodhorse Breeders' Association's Shizunai Stallion Station, alongside other high-profile former American and European horses such as Bago, Johannesburg, Opera House and Stravinsky.

The son of Unbridled and exceptional broodmare Toussaud has sired five Grade 1 winners since retiring to stud in 2004, among them last year's Spinster Stakes winner Acoma and 2009  Kentucky Derby runner-up Pioneerof The Nile.

Soaring Empire is one of two winners from his dam, the AP Indy mare Flying Passage, who is a half-sister to the dam of Grade 1 winner Serra Lake. Third dam Too Chic won the Grade 1 Maskette Stakes and produced 1991 champion older US mare Queena, who also won the Maskette and is dam of top Irish juvenile Brahms.

The weekend's other major stakes race in the US saw the six-year-old Aggie Engineer collect the Grade 2 San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita.

Bred by Ward and Roberta Williford, Aggie Engineer is by the Pennsylvania-based Mr Prospector horse E Dubai, who was bought by Tarry Bratton’s Ghost Ridge Farms last October having previously been based at Darley's Lexington operation. His 2011 fee has been set at $10,000.

Aggie Engineer is out of the French-raced Papalma, a mare by Dixieland Band who is a half-sister to Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes winner Papal Power.

Third dam Gris Vitesse won the Prix Jacques le Marois and produced Derby and Irish Derby-placed Silver Hawk.
