King George hero Swain retired from stud duty

SWAIN, one of only two horses to win back-to-back King Georges, has been retired from stud duty. The 19-year-old son of Nashwan will live out his days at Shadwell Farm in Kentucky, where he stood from 1998 to 2009.

"He was standing up in Canada and we made the decision to retire him following the breeding season," said Kent Barnes, stallion managerat Shadwell Farm, yesterday. "So we brought him home and now he's in a paddock across from our other retired stallion, Dayjur."

Swain stood his first season at Shadwell for $35,000 in 1999 following an outstanding career in which he won ten of 22 starts.

Successful in the Grand Prix de Deauville Lancel at three, Swain landed the Coronation Cup the following year for Andre Fabre before developing into a top-class performer for Godolphin.

He landed a vintage King George at the expense of Pilsudski and Helissio in 1997 and returned the next year to serve up a repeat performance when fending off that year's Derby winner High-Rise. Also successful in the Irish Champion Stakes, he signed offhis career with a third in the Breeders' Cup Classic, in which his chance was compromised when he hung badly in the closing stages.

Although Swain spent his entire stud career in North America, he has enjoyed considerably more successas a stallion in Europe.

Six of his 11 black-type winners were campaigned in Europe led by Dimitrova, who was trained by Dermot Weld to win the Grade 1 Flower Bowl Invitational in 2003. The filly was the highlight of her sire's 55-strong first crop, which also included Greenham Stakes winner Muqbil.

Other stand-out European performers include May Hill Stakes heroine Nasheej and Prix Thomas Bryon winner Makaan while in America he has been represented by San Luis ReyHandicap winner Stanley Park.

Swain spent the last two seasons standing alongside Aljabr at Ascot Stud in Ontario, Canada, latterly at a fee of C$3,500.
