Dragon first to win Hong Kong's Triple Crown

RAPPER DRAGON'S success in the Hong Kong Derby on Sunday took him still further clear as the biggest earner to date for his sire Street Boss.

Having won the first two legs, the Australian-bred gelding had dominated the build-up to the HK$18 million (£1,870,000 / €2,160,000) climax to Hong Kong's version of the Triple Crown - and duly dominated the race itself, as well.

On the tail of the leaders rounding the home turn, Rapper Dragon took the lead two furlongs out and stayed on strongly to see off a fast-finishing Pakistan Star, a son of Shamardal, by one and three-quarter lengths, with Beauty Generation, a son of Australian sire Road To Rock, the same distance further back in third.

Helene Charisma, who raced in France as Mont Ormel, finished fifth. The Air Chief Marshal colt won the Grand Prix de Paris at Saint-Cloud last year, but is yet to get off the mark in four starts for Moore in Hong Kong.

Bred by Eduardo Cojuangco, Rapper Dragon is out of the Danehill Dancer mare Swing Dancer, a sister to the talented handicapper Turf Express, and half-sister to the top-class Amanpour, who won the Queen of the Turf Stakes over a mile at Randwick in 2015.

Rapper Dragon raced in Australia as a juvenile and was runner-up to Pasadena Girl in the Champagne Stakes at Randwick in 2015. Switched from Gai Waterhouse to John Moore, he has excelled at Sha Tin, becoming the first horse ever to sweep the four-year-old series of Classic Mile, Classic Cup and Derby.

Street Boss, a son of Street Cry, has supplied five top-flight winners to date including the Newmarket Handicap winner The Quarterback and Kentucky Oaks heroine Cathryn Sophia, both winning at the highest level in 2016.

The 13-year-old is standing the 2017 breeding season at Jonebell Farm in Kentucky at a fee of $17,500.
