Dragon Dancer half sister makes 320,000gns

A PAIR of foals from Kirsten Rausing's St Simon Stud lit up proceedings in front of a packed sales ring at the Tattersalls December Sale as dusk descended on to Park Paddocks today.

One of the most talked about lots of the day was Rausing's Medicean half-sister to Derby runner-up Dragon Dancer, and the filly didn't disappoint, eventually falling to Alan Cooper on behalf of Course Investment Corp. for 320,000gns.

Patrick Cooper, standing with his brother Alan, threw in an opening bid of 200,000gns. That, however, was quickly surpassedby Tom Goff of Blandford Bloodstock standing alongside colleage Richard Brown at the top of the stairs opposite the rostrum.

However, Goff cried enough once the bidding hit 320,000gns, meaning that the filly will join her half-brotherAjaan in the Niarcho family's' Haras du Fresnay-le-Buffard fold.

"She's a lovely filly and the Machivallian on a Hernando mare is our blood," said Cooper. "We have Ajaan with Henry Cecil and we hope he goes on next year. This ‘Al ‘ family of Kirsten's is extraordinary and let's hope she can run."

Kirsten Rausing added: "I'm thrilled my friend Maria Niarchos-Gouaze bought her and I hope she's lucky. It's a sign of the times but two years ago she'd have made a different price but this is the market now."

As well as Dragon Dancer, the March-born youngster is a half-sister to minor winner Albarouche, who topped the 2006 Goffs Million Sale when selling to Barouche Stud for €2,000,000.

In addition, she traces to the outstanding producer Alruccaba, ancestress of Aussie Rules and Yesterday among others, and is a granddaughter of the Group 1-placed Alouette.

Preceding the filly into the ring was a colt by sire of the moment Oasis Dream, who was knocked down to prolific pinhooker Eugene McDermott of Kennycourt Stud for 240,000gns following a duel with John Ferguson.

The colt is the secondfoal out of Karliyna, a Listed-placed half-sister to classy stayer Kasthari. The daughter of Rainbow Quest was purchased out of the Aga Khan Studs by Richard Frisby for 340,000gns in 2005.
